This week, we read Safina's book. I chose the third chapter: Whines and Pet Peeves. What impressed me most was the people and our relationship with whales, elephants and wolves. In each part of this book, Dr. Safina spent time focusing on leading researchers and biologists in the research field, and discussed the extraordinary culture, family bonds, intelligence, and communication skills of these animals. Emotions and many other fascinating aspects take a step back and expand the horizon to other species with similar behavior, emotions and intelligence.

My research topic is initially determined to be elephants and communication. I think an elephant is a very intelligent animal. In ancient times, elephants were regarded as combat troops, which is a kind of recognition of elephants. And humans can tame elephants, I guess it must be because there is a very special way of communication between elephants and humans. At the same time, I am also very interested in the communication between elephants and elephants. Scientists speculate that based on the shock waves formed by elephants, elephants are likely to use ground vibrations caused by low-frequency calls to communicate with each other. I want to conduct research on this topic. I think this will be a very exciting study.
I think following Twitter on zoologists and wildlife protection associations is a good channel for me to gather information. I saw a lot of videos and research about wild elephants on Twitter, which is of great help to my research topic. At the same time, I think there is a lot of valuable information on Wikipedia. For example, I found Raman Sukumar on Wikipedia. He is devoted to the study of Asian elephant protection. I can start with some research from his thesis. I am looking forward to my results!

Hello Melody,
I enjoyed reading your topic of proposed research, elephants are definitely worth the time studying.
Hi Melody
I had also read the third chapter from Safina’s book. Additionally, I also observed that in third chapter the author was also trying to point out mistakes in design of experiments as well as point out misunderstandings which make people be blinded to animal's intelligence.
I really like your topic about elephant. I can see that you have a great narrowed down and you are really interested in the topic you have chosen. I did not know about how the elephants use ground to communicated. It really sounds cool.
